Entrepreneurship Isn't One Sized Fits All

Today, I am gathering everyone around the table for some real talk. (It's a metaphorical table, because my dining room table only fits 2 people and my apartment is tiny!) It's time we had this talk, small business owner to small business owner. This conversation feels raw and like it can't really be wrapped up with a catchy tag-line, but it needs to be shared nonetheless.

The other day as I was talking to some friends about business strategies for marketing and social media, one friend said, "If you don't have a financial goal/plan, then it's just not a business, it's a hobby." That comment felt like a slap in the face and simultaneously my desire to share the message that entrepreneurship isn't a one size fits all thing. While there is a black and white line between filing what you do as a business legally, there is so much gray area in the in between about when something you've created out of passion is a business.

Overcoming Doubts and Insecurities

Repeat after me: everyone doubts themselves and everyone has insecurities, even Adele. In an interview she said, "I have insecurities of course but I don't hang out with anyone who points them out to me." While everyone faces doubts and insecurities, self-doubt can effect individuals who are creative more intensely and even destroy creativity as a result. Why? People who are creative are often wired to experience things intensely, meaning that a doubt that someone else may have shrugged off, sticks around and plants roots.

One minute you may feel on top of the world, and then the next your self-doubt leaves feeling paralyzed and directionless. An important thing to identify is where your doubts and insecurities comes from. Doubts can creep in based on a comment from a family member, a childhood criticism, a lull when you're not feeling creative, or even from comparison to others. How many times have you been scrolling along through social media feeling great until you see something that ignites the fire in your gut? Maybe it's a photographer who shot your dream client's wedding, or another entrepreneur getting recognized for their work. Within minutes you go from feeling good to thinking "Maybe I should just quit and give up this dream...maybe I'm not cut out for this!"

Why Boundaries are Key for Mental Health

This week I want to talk about something that I see a lot of creative entrepreneurs (and pretty much every other human being) struggling with...Boundaries!

Creative people in general tend to struggle with boundaries. Why? If you are creative, you likely are more right (or creative) brained. You are wired for flexibility, lack of rules and rigidity, and freedom. And boundaries sound a lot like the opposite of those things and can be particularly difficult for people who identify themselves as people pleasers.

One of the reasons that I think this is so hard for creative business owners is because you live, eat, and likely breathe your business. That means working weekends, nights, and blowing off your friends and family members in the process. It means letting clients contact you at all hours of the day...but it doesn't have to! In order to maintain good mental health, it is imperative to learn to set and enforce boundaries. I am not telling you to build walls, but I am telling you to begin to think about developing boundaries for yourself.
