Have you ever felt mentally or physically taxed by running your business?
You aren’t alone.
Giving your heart and soul to your work can lead to a host of mental health effects, from burnout to depression. Have you ever wondered if creative individuals struggle with issues like anxiety at higher rates than those who don’t identify as creatives? You’re on to something. It’s true, we do.
So, what are we all doing here?
The best place to start is with a little bit of my own story. Let’s dig in!
My career as an artist started unintentionally while I was getting my master's degree in Mental Health Counseling. I needed a creative outlet, not a side hustle, but slowly the people buying my work turned from family and friends to people I didn't know all over the world. I had launched a business.
As my business gained momentum, I started to struggle with how to balance the creative and business parts of my life. I loved making, but hated doing the backend work. What had once solely been a source of once was a joy, became something that exhausted me, gave me anxiety, and kept me from being present in the day-to-day.
Anyone else relate?
During this struggle I noticed that there are seemingly endless amounts of skill based groups for business owners. Groups that teach you to find your niché, market yourself, grow your email following...and so much more. The one thing I couldn't find was a group that dealt with the mental cost of business and how mental health impacts creative entrepreneurs.
I knew I had to do something about that, because if you don’t take care of your mental heath, who will? I firmly believe it's possible to have a thriving business and a healthy personal life, but we have to prioritize ourselves in order to do that.
So here we are, together, on the journey to create a community and a space that allows us to speak openly. A space that allows us to dig deeper into mental health, sharing our insecurities and doubts, while tackling them together. I've created the following resources to help start the hard conversations and connect creative entrepreneurs who are as committed to their mental health as they are to their business!
Each Monday, you can find a blog post written just for creative entrepreneurs. These posts include information about why creative brains process the world differently and give helpful tips to make small changes in your own life!
